The Magic of Lighting and Timing in Landscape Photography

Welcome to my first blog post! I’m Lucas Diack, a landscape photographer with a deep love for capturing the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest. Through this blog, I’ll be sharing insights into my creative process, along with tips and stories from my photography journey. I hope these posts inspire you to see nature’s beauty through a different lens—literally and figuratively.

When it comes to landscape photography, lighting and timing are everything. I remember one particular morning, deep in the Rockies, when I had scouted a perfect spot the night before. I woke up at 4 a.m., packed my gear, and made my way in the dark to this location. As the sun began to rise, the scene transformed. The mountains, previously in shadow, were now bathed in a soft, golden light. That brief window, where everything aligns just right, is fleeting, and I knew that without getting the timing and lighting spot-on, the moment would have been lost.

It’s in those moments—often the ones when most people are still asleep—that I feel most connected to my surroundings. Timing not only shapes the quality of the light but also the mood of the scene. A landscape photographed at noon versus sunrise can tell an entirely different story. It’s this unpredictability that keeps me coming back to the wilderness, always chasing that perfect light, because no two mornings are ever the same. That’s the magic of what I do, and why lighting and timing are my ultimate guides in capturing nature’s ever-changing beauty.
